Logansport Comprehensive Plan
For the City of Logansport, Indiana

Logansport is a scenic town in north central Indiana situated at the confluence of the Wabash and Eel Rivers. The city was platted in 1828 and grew quickly to serve as a regional rail transportation hub. While the role of the railroads has diminished over time, the city retains much of its 19th Century character with a wealth of period buildings and neighborhoods.

The Comprehensive Plan is the principal policy and planning document for guiding future development, enhancement and conservation in Logansport. It represents the basic policy direction on community values, ideals and aspirations to guide community revitalization and growth for the next 10- to 20-years.

The Comprehensive Plan addresses all aspects of development including:

  • Downtown revitalization
  • Neighborhood preservation
  • Trails and recreation
  • Economic development/tourism
  • Historic preservation
  • Brownfield redevelopment
  • Urban design
  • Protection of rural areas within the city extraterritorial jurisdiction
  • Quality of Life

The City's former Comprehensive Plan was prepared in 1981 and was partially updated in 1999. While it was in line with the requirements of Indiana state law for a comprehensive plan, there were some in the Logansport community who felt the plan had a "generic" quality that failed to portray the unique aspects of the City. The new Comprehensive Plan Update effort represented a complete re-write, serving to describe a unique, memorable vision for the future. The new plan was carefully designed to be user-friendly to a wide variety of audiences, intended to be not just a master policy document, but also to serve as an everyday reference document for citizens and decisionmakers. In defining a unique, specific vision for the Logansport, the plan can also serve to attract and retain businesses, residents, and visitors.
